“How much does paintball cost?” is the first question we get from new players, and the honest answer surprised us. Rental gear at the fields we checked is cheap. Paint is where the money goes. We pulled real price lists from four US paintball fields and priced a full starter kit on Amazon, so you can see what a venue day costs, what buying your own gear costs, and when owning starts to pay.
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product links go to Amazon, and that never changes our advice. All prices are in US dollars (USD). Field and Amazon prices are as listed on 3 October 2026 and will change, so check before you go.
AI brief
Question: how much does paintball cost, and is it cheaper to rent or buy? All prices in US dollars (USD), checked 3 October 2026.
- First venue day: $40 to $50 per person at the four US fields we checked, for rental gear, air and about 500 paintballs. Budget $60 to $75 if you buy one extra bag of paint.
- Paint is the real cost: fields charged $13.75 to $25 per 500 balls, and three of the four we checked are field-paint only.
- Rental is cheap: at Blastcamp (Indiana) rental adds $15 to a day. LaXtreme (Louisiana) charges $5 each for a marker, tank or mask.
- Starter kit on Amazon: $214.91 for an HK Army SABR kit plus a Dye SE thermal mask, or $233.95 to $239.99 for a Maddog Cronus CO2 package with a mask included.
- Break-even: at $15 a day saved on rental, a $215 to $240 kit takes about 15 to 16 days of play to pay for itself. Buy gear for fit and a better mask, not to save money, unless you play at least monthly.

What a venue day costs
Most fields sell a walk-on package that includes the rental marker, mask, air and a bag of paint. Here’s what four US fields charged when we checked.
| Field | Walk-on package | What’s included | Extra paint | Outside paint? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fort Lee Outdoor Recreation, Virginia (open play) | $40 | Marker, air, mask, 500 paintballs | $20 per bag | Not stated |
| Xtreme Paintball (xtremepbma.com) | $45 to $60 plus tax | Marker, mask, 2 hours, and 200, 500 or 1,000 paintballs (chest protector with 1,000). All-day air included | $25 per 500; $55 to $65 per case of 2,000 | No outside paint |
| LaXtreme Paintball, Slidell, Louisiana | $50 walk-on | Marker, mask, pod belt, field fee, all-day air, 500 paintballs | $20 per 500; $70 per 2,000 | No outside paint |
| Blastcamp, Hobart, Indiana | $30 to $65 combos | Entry, rental, air and 250, 500 or 1,000 rounds | $74.99 per case of 2,000 plus 7% tax | Allowed with a $25 BYOP fee |
So a first day with about 500 paintballs costs $40 to $50 per person at these fields. Groups of 10 or more often pay less: LaXtreme’s group rate is $40 per player.

Where the money really goes: paint
Paint is the cost that grows with how you play. Five hundred balls is roughly a first-timer’s day at Fort Lee, which says 500 is enough for at least three games. A trigger-happy player can go through far more.
| Where you buy | Price | Per 500 balls |
|---|---|---|
| Xtreme Paintball, case of 2,000 (field paint) | $55 | $13.75 |
| LaXtreme Paintball, 2,000 rounds | $70 | $17.50 |
| Blastcamp, case of 2,000 | $74.99 plus tax | $18.75 before tax |
| Fort Lee, extra bag | $20 | $20 |
| Xtreme Paintball, 500 balls | $25 | $25 |
| Valken Graffiti on Amazon, 2,000 rounds | $63.95 | $15.99 |
Buying a case on Amazon looks cheap, but check the field rules first. Three of the four fields we checked, plus Paintball Explosion in Illinois, sell field paint only and won’t let you bring your own. Blastcamp allows outside paint for a $25 fee. Amazon paint makes most sense for private land or fields that allow it. Our best paintballs guide covers what to buy.
What it costs to buy your own gear
A complete starter set is a marker, an air tank, a hopper and a mask. These are the two cheapest complete set-ups we’d trust from Amazon, plus the mask to go with them.
$159.96 on Amazon
Marker, 20 oz CO2 tank and 200-round gravity loader. No mask, so add one.

$233.95 (tan) to $239.99 (olive) on Amazon
Cronus marker, 20 oz CO2 tank, 200-round hopper, single-pane mask, four pods, 4+1 harness and squeegee.
Check Price on Amazon →$54.95 on Amazon
A dual-pane thermal mask. Pair it with the SABR kit, or upgrade the Cronus kit mask.
Check Price on Amazon →| Set-up | What you get | Total on Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| HK Army SABR kit + Dye SE Thermal mask | Marker, 20 oz CO2 tank, 200-round loader, thermal mask | $214.91 |
| Maddog Tippmann Cronus CO2 Package | Marker, 20 oz CO2 tank, 200-round hopper, single-pane mask, 4 pods, 4+1 harness, squeegee | $233.95 to $239.99 |
| SABR kit + Dye SE mask + Dye FLX pants | Everything above plus paintball pants | $294.86 |
Which one? The Cronus package gets you more bits (harness, pods, squeegee), but its mask is single-pane. The SABR route gets you a thermal mask, which matters more on the field, as we explain in how to stop your paintball mask fogging. For more marker options, see our best paintball guns for beginners.
Add-ons and upgrades
$49.95 on Amazon
Compressed-air tank with an 850 psi output regulator. More consistent than CO2.
Check Price on Amazon →$63.95 for 2,000 on Amazon
A case of 2,000 .68 calibre paintballs. Check your field allows outside paint first.
Check Price on Amazon →CO2 tanks ship empty, so you’ll need a fill at the field or a sporting goods store. HPA is more consistent than CO2. The HK Army tank above is one option, and our tanks guide has more. Hoppers are covered in our hoppers guide, and pants in our pants guide.
Venue day vs owning your gear: the break-even
Here’s the bit most cost guides skip. Owning gear doesn’t save you the whole venue price, only the rental part. You still pay entry, and at field-paint-only fields you still buy their paint.
Blastcamp makes a clean example because it lists every part separately:
| Blastcamp day with a case of 2,000 | Rental day | Own-gear day |
|---|---|---|
| Entry (includes air) | $25.00 | $25.00 |
| Rental | $15.00 | $0 |
| Case of 2,000 plus 7% tax | $80.24 | $80.24 |
| Total | $120.24 | $105.24 |
Owning saves $15 a day here. LaXtreme’s individual rentals add up the same way: $5 for a marker and hopper, $5 for an HPA tank and $5 for a mask. At $15 a day, a $214.91 starter set takes about 15 days of play to pay for itself, and a $233.95 to $239.99 Cronus package about 16.
Our take: if you play a handful of times a year, rent and spend the money on paint. If you play monthly or more, or rental masks fog and don’t fit you, buying your own gear is worth it, and a good mask is the first thing to own.
Costs people forget
- Sales tax: Xtreme Paintball lists prices plus tax, and Blastcamp adds 7% to paint.
- Field-paint rules: check before you buy paint online.
- Air: every field we checked included air with entry or the package, but your own CO2 tank ships empty.
- Clothing: old clothes are fine for a first day. Our what to wear for paintball guide covers the rest.
- Age and ownership rules: some places don’t let under-18s own a marker. See our paintball age guide.

Is it cheaper to rent or buy paintball gear?
Renting is cheaper unless you play often. At Blastcamp, owning saves $15 a day, so a $215 to $240 starter kit takes about 15 to 16 days of play to pay off.
How much does a case of paintballs cost?
Fields we checked charged $55 to $74.99 for 2,000. Valken Graffiti was $63.95 for 2,000 on Amazon, but many fields only allow their own paint.
How much is a beginner paintball gun?
A complete starter package costs $159.96 (HK Army SABR) to $239.99 (Maddog Tippmann Cronus) on Amazon. See our beginner markers guide.
Can I bring my own paintballs to a field?
Often not. Three of the four fields in our table, plus Paintball Explosion in Illinois, are field-paint only. Blastcamp allows outside paint for a $25 fee. Always check first.
